An office in the garden
Your garden can provide an excellent place for building your office.
If you work at home, you are likely to have drawbacks when working
in the house, as opposed to the garden. For a start, if you have
pets, you are likely to find irritating noises occur, just as you
talk to that important client. Similarly, children, (even the best
behaved) are inclined to let off steam when arriving home and at
various times during school holidays. Having a mixture of a home
office and young children can cause a lot of tension where the office
is effectively intruding upon home life. It is actually quite clear
that far from the children intruding on your office, you are actually
causing unnecessary arguments and problems by asking children to
be quiet when their friends would not be stopped from playing at
home.

So, an upstairs room or downstairs study might not be the most
ideal place to site your office. Some therefore resort to converting
the garage. This has the advantage (particularly if it is integral)
of being more out of the way. However, there are again drawbacks.
Garages are often very cold places to work and unless you are lucky,
also need new windows fitted (and doors if not integral to the house),
or else some form of lighting for the entire day. There is also
a security issue if all you have is a garage door in the way of
intruders and so you are likely to have the expense of adding in
a partition and access door actually within the garage space.
Having worked in an office situated in a garage for years, I can
assure you that this is not the best option! I was cold in Winter
and in danger of being too hot in the Summer. The thing that really
got to me was the lack of natural light and although natural light
bulbs were a great help, you cannot get away from the fact that
there are no windows and that you have no outlook, (other than a
door!).
If you are easily distracted or don't particularly like being shut
in, then working in the house is not for you!
Working in a garden, removes many of these issues, giving you a
separation from home and work life and more of a private space for
your business dealings, whilst still allowing you much more quality
time with your family. The building may also add value to your property
if potential buyers may want an office for business or private use
(ask your estate agent for details of likely increase in value).Click
