How suitable is a log cabin as an office?
Very! They are quick to erect and can largely be done
by someone with only limited DIY skills (although obviously,
a qualified electrician will be needed for electrical
wiring and telephones and some elements require a helping
pair of hands to lift into place).
You get a viable outside office space which is secure,
dry and a very pleasant environment to work in. More
importantly, it can take you out of the house (or the
garage - been there!) and away from those interruptions
caused by household noises. This in itself is invaluable
for the home worker, as it helps to give a break from
work and home life. Inevitably, if you work in the house,
you get noise and disturbance issues that just don't
occur in the same way as when your office is outside.
Visitors to your office don't get to walk through your
house either, which can give a far more professional
impression.

Looks
New style log cabins use flat logs to build up the structure
and clever grooving and crossing over of the members
at the corners and wall joints and roof in order to
give stability and rigidity to the structure.
What are they like to work in?
The first answer is beautiful. Obviously, you can choose
to cover the walls, but flat log walls provide a beautiful
finish and a professional feel for a really smart office
area. The height of the structure gives a great feeling
of space and provided you have a couple of windows,
it is a great, light and airy environment for working
in year round. Click

Insulation and ventilation
Flat logs are thinner than round, but they provide excellent
thermal properties if they are of the correct thickness.
In addition, our logs are Siberian grown pine, produced
in sustainable forests and the slow growth makes the
wood denser than normal pine and therefore thermally
better.
For use as an office, we would advise no thinner than
44mm logs should be used but ideally, you should splash
out and use thicker logs or even a double skinned structure
to give a really snug environment in Winter or cool
in the Summer. I sit in a 44mm thick structure and simply
turn the heating on for a few minutes in the morning
before starting the days work (and then leave a heater
on periodically through the day), whilst leaving trickle
heating on over night.
All our units are double glazed, using tough modern
glass and offer easy opening, whilst securing at two
or more points in the frame for security. They both
swing open and hinge at the top to allow air flow without
a fully opened window.
I would advise that your office has at least two windows
one on one wall and one on an adjacent end wall, to
allow for air flow through the office in Summer and
to provide a lighter environment in the Winter. Having
sat through a very hot summer, I can say that the office,
although hot, was still pleasant enough to work in,
due to the ventilation provided.
If you require constant temperature and therefore air
conditioning, you would be well advised to look at a
double skinned cabin to provide extra insulation in
the walls and to also fit out the rafter space with
insulation materials. This is obviously a balance between
initial cost and longer term running costs.Click
